African Elephant
Everyone knows elephants, due to their great size, long trunks and tusks (teeth that stick outside their mouths). These are the world’s largest land animals. African elephants are the largest of the world’s elephants. They have larger ears and longer tusks than their cousins Asian Elephants and African Forest Elephants.
African Elephants have trouble finding bathroom scales that go up to 20,000 pounds.
Physical Description
Enormous grayish animals with a rounded body, long trunk and tusks. Elephants have very little fur throughout their bodies. They have large flat, flapping ears and thick rounded legs.
Family Life
Elephants live in family groups called herds, led by an older female (known as a matriarch). Baby elephants are called calves. They are raised by the herd and stay with the herd throughout their lives. When male elephants grow up they leave the herd to live with other males or on their own.
